FDA RE-EVALUATES SOY PROTEIN

Feb 1, 2008 12:00 PM

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is collecting public comments on its intent to re-evaluate the scientific evidence for two existing authorized health claims: soy protein and risk of coronary heart disease and dietary lipids (fat) and cancer.

The soy protein health claim was authorized in 1999 with strong support of the American Soybean Association. FDA's notice states that, “numerous studies have evaluated the relationship between soy protein and coronary heart disease, and the findings of these studies are inconsistent… The agency intends to evaluate the scientific evidence of soy protein and the risk of coronary heart disease to determine if the totality of the scientific evidence continues to meet the significant scientific agreement standard.”

The soy health claim states that a daily diet containing 25 grams of soy protein, also low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
