Brazil Now Embraces GMOS

Nov 1, 2006 12:00 PM

The Brazilian Seed Producers Association, Abrasem, estimates that about 72% of Brazil's new soybean crop will be genetically modified varieties, far more than the 30-40% that most market analysts had previously estimated.

The official seed market has slowly been improving since Brazil legalized commercial use of GMO seed in early 2005. Brazil's government is now subsidizing an exchange program whereby producers using black market GMO soy can trade in their seed for certified GMO, which it hopes will improve yields.
